What is Life? My perspective..

There was this Irish Clergyman and Philosopher who once written a treatise that leads to speculation that life is but a dream. His name was George Berkeley, a noted empericist. That when you die, it is like that you are just awaken from your sleep while you are dreaming. Sounds abstract, is it not? Maybe some will agree and some will not. This is because we perceived life in different perspectives or point of views. We come across different experiences that is why we have different opinion. To each his own, so to speak.

As for me, life or living is a process. It is our decisions that defines who we really are today. There is no such thing as destiny. That we become who we are because of or/and in accordance with our destiny is but a wishful thinking. Maybe, there could be such thing as destiny but having a different meaning or connotation, like for example, destiny is a matter of choice or destiny is a thing to be achieved. As credit to him/her, I owe that meaning or connotation of destiny to somebody who is commonly known as "anonymous".

Take a look at this, even we are on the assumption that there is such animal as destiny and granting you are destined to become a lawyer but you are enrolled in medicine, absolutely you will not become a lawyer. Just because you are destined to become as such, do you think you become one even you are enrolled in medicine? Oh, come on what a mess if that would happen! Another one, many couples are claiming that just because they got married with that person they would right there and then said "they are destined with each other". Would you agree with me should I say that it was because of his/her CHOICE to marry that person that hold water and not because of destiny? Think of it!

To make the record straight, I did not believe in destiny and you I can defy it should there be any. I met different kinds of people coming from all walks of life. There was this one fellow who said that his childhood dream was to become doctor but because his parents are poor and cannot afford to send him to school his dream did not come true. He further said that maybe because it was his destiny not to become a doctor. I said that it was your choice not to become a doctor that was why you did not enrolled in medicine. Because how come you enrolled in commerce were in fact you want to become a doctor? You cannot use your being a less fortunate as an excuse. Take a look at your surroundings. You are not the only one who is a less fortunate. There were many of those who strive financially yet, the became professionals of their choice. It was their choice and determination to become as such that materializes their dreams. They just did not want poverty to keep their dreams unreachable. Well, may be those who were born with golden spoon have slight edge over their counterpart. Nothing less, nothing more.

Life is what we make it. Life's events happened not merely because of chances. They happened because of a particular purpose which we might not have known for the meantime. Its purpose may be known later on. So dont take on chances. If you want something to happen work for it.

During my childhood years I dont have any definite ambition in life. Becoming a lawyer was not even my dream. Imagine, I graduated high school from a vocational school. At college, I earned a degree of Electronics and Communications Engineering. It was when after I passed the licensure examination I realized that being a licensed engineer was not a guarantee to land for a job. It made me realized that a proper career orientation should have been undertaken by a high school graduate before deciding what course should be taken in college. Absence of which is a waste of time and money. Good for me I was able to identify my problem right away. Thus, I enrolled at the College of Law. In other words I became a lawyer because of necessity and not because of clamor due to its prestige.
To borrow the verse used by Robert Frost in his famous boem "The Road Not Taken", "Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less travelled by, And that has made all the difference".

Lawyers in our community are highly treated with utmost respect and honor. People stare us with envious looks. Sometimes because of that we tend to conclude we are "a class in itself" just like celebrities. At first, I was reluctant to be called as "attorney" because I am naturally shy. But now I was able to embrace the reality of being a lawyer and I'm happy the way it is. The years while I was in law school was my defining moment. It was then that I was able to push my self beyond limits. Thus, when I passed the bar it seems that I killed two birds with a single bullet. I now knew how to outdo myself and most of all I became a member of the bar, an exclusive group of lawyers in the Philippines.
As gleaned from the afomentioned circumstances, I cannot imagine what my life would be if I stuck to my previous calling. Perhaps I am working in a manufacturing company and forced to work on a night shift, or as a call center agent. To be certain, an employee forever and I dont want to be imprisoned of ministerial functions.
